The artist Ivan Milev is one of the extraordinary representatives of Bulgarian Modernism. His paintings of fairylands and of the soul and fate of his people made him a central figure of the Bulgarian artistic and cultural landscape of the 1920s. Ivan Milev and his art gave cruscial impulses for the developments of Bulgarian art during the 20th century.
This site offers well grounded scientific information regarding this important figure of Bulgarian art, giving insight into his work, the context and development of Bulgarian Modernism and an extensive international and Bulgarian bibliography.

In the long ramblings of his art, Ivan Milev was one of the few who was able to give all of himself, his soul of a Bulgarian and his secret of a native painter. And he did it not because he painted peasants, monasteries and household interiors - others have painted these things without being native - but because he experienced his own self even in the most alien of motifs.
